Hirose River

Japanese:
Hirose River

The largest tributary of the Natori River, which flows through central Miyagi Prefecture. It originates at Sekiyama Pass on the border with Yamagata Prefecture, flows east through the Ayashi Basin and Sendai city, and merges with the Natori River near Nippe in Wakabayashi Ward, Sendai city. It is about 40 kilometers long. River terraces can be seen in the Ayashi Basin and Sendai city. National Route 48 and JR Senzan Line run parallel to the river. It was the site of a battle during the Oshu Conquest in 1189 (Bun'ei 5), and in 1351 (Shohei 6, Kan'o 2), the Southern Court and Northern Court fought across the river. In the early modern period, it was used as a natural outer moat for Sendai Aoba Castle, and water taken from Goroku (Sendai city) flowed under the castle as Yotsuya Weir. Sankyozawa Power Station, completed in 1886 (Meiji 19), was the first waterway power station in the Tohoku region, using the waters of the Hirose River. In the upper reaches of the station are Sakunami Onsen, the Okura Dam on the Okura River, a tributary of the river, and Jōge Onsen.
