A bamboo or bamboo species of the grass family (APG classification: Poaceae). The culms are 3-5 meters tall and 1-3 centimeters in diameter. Many grow together to form a clump. Three to five branches grow upward from each node at the top of the culm, which then branch out densely into small branches and form a broom-like shape. The leaves are narrowly lanceolate, 15-30 centimeters long, 1-2 centimeters wide, long and pointed at the tip, glabrous on both sides, stiff and erect. The shoulder hairs are smooth, and the ligule is high and 3-4 millimeters long. The name comes from the broom held by Hanshan in the painting "Hanshan and Shide." Native to southern China, it is cultivated in Japan from the southern Kanto region westward.
