A collection of criminal precedents from the Edo Shogunate. The Edo Shogunate initially had a policy of not creating legal codes or collections of precedents, as they would restrict the free judgment of judges. However, as precedents were accumulated and the judicial system was improved, those involved in the courts began to seek certain standards for judgment. During the Kanbun period (1661-73), court records began to be preserved and organized, and from the Genroku period (1688-1704) onwards, various collections of precedents were compiled. The Oshioki Saikyocho is the largest of its kind and is relatively well-organized, making it an important record of the Shogunate's criminal administration before the enactment of the Kujikata Osadamegaki (1742).
