A legendary figure from the 6th century BCE in ancient Rome. He tried to assassinate the Etruscan king Porsenna, who was besieging Rome, by sneaking into his camp. However, he was captured and showed his courage by putting his right hand in the fire. Porsenna was so moved that he forgave him and ended the siege. For this reason, he came to be called Scaevola (the man with the left hand).
