Miyakoji [village] - Miyakoji

Japanese: 都路[村] - みやこじ

A village in Tamura County, eastern Fukushima Prefecture. Population 3,416 (1995). Located almost in the center of the Abukuma Highlands. Surrounded by mountains 700-900m above sea level, including Mt. Gojunin (883m), the village is mostly made up of forests and plains. The central settlement is Furumichi, a town and village facing the old Miyakoji Kaido (National Route 288), which connects Koriyama City with central Hamadori. Charcoal production and horse breeding have been carried out here since ancient times, and horse breeding in particular became popular after the Miharu Domain encouraged the villagers by lending them quality horses in the 17th century. After World War II, the town shifted to beef cattle breeding and pulpwood production.

福島県東部，田村郡の村。人口3416(1995)。阿武隈高地のほぼ中央に位置する。周囲を五十人山(883m)をはじめとする標高700～900mの山々に囲まれ，山林原野が村域の大半を占める。中心集落は古道（ふるみち）で，郡山市と浜通り中部とを結ぶ旧都路街道(国道288号線)に面する街村である。古くから製炭と馬産が行われ，特に馬産は17世紀に三春藩が優良馬を貸し付けて奨励して以来盛んになった。第2次大戦後は肉牛飼育やパルプ材生産に移行した。
