God's Assembly - Jinne (English spelling) Shén huì
670‐762
A Chinese Zen monk from the mid-Tang dynasty. Known as Nanyang Hesho, Heze Shenhui, and Hannya Shinshu Daishi. His secular surname was Gao, and he was from Xiangyang, Hubei Province. He first studied under Shenxiu at Yuquan Temple, but then traveled to Caoxi to visit Huineng. He criticized his fellow monk Fujaku, focusing on Heze Temple in Luoyang, and promoted gradual teaching and sudden enlightenment. The establishment of Zen Buddhism, which regards Bodhidharma as its founder, was largely due to his activities. In his later years, during the An Lushan Rebellion, he widely gave precepts to Taoists and laypeople, collecting perfume money and helping the Tang dynasty's finances. His historical facts and ideas were made known through Hu Shi's Collected Works of Priest Shenhui, a Dunhuang document, marking a new beginning in the study of Zen history.
