Suetsumuhana

A collection of Senryu poems from the mid-Edo period. Four volumes. The first volume was published in 1776 (An'ei 5), and the fourth volume was published in 1802 (Kyowa 2). Each volume contains about 500 to 600 poems. The title of the book is also "Haifu Suetsumuhana." "Suezumuhana" is a reference to the chapter on Suetsumuhana in The Tale of Genji, which refers to the selection of love poems from the last round (the lowest-ranked winners) of the Senryu Poetry Competition. It is a collection of vulgar and humorous love poems, and is intended to be a version of the love poems in "Yanagi Daru." The subject matter of the poems is obscene, starting with the opening line, "The clams are early in the morning, the ark shells are midnight," but the expressions are often witty and humorous, making the poems valuable as a source of information on Edo customs. In the Taisho period, Sawada Reigai compiled 5 to 8 of the poems.

江戸中期の川柳(せんりゅう)句集。4編。初編1776年（安永5）刊、4編1802年（享和2）刊か。各編約500～600句を収める。書名は『誹風(はいふう)末摘花』とも。「末摘花」は、川柳評万句合(まんくあわせ)の末番(すえばん)（末等入賞）中より恋の句を抜粋したことを、『源氏物語』末摘花の巻に言い掛けた命名で、卑俗で滑稽(こっけい)な恋の句を集成し、『柳多留(やなぎだる)』の恋の句版を意図したもの。「蛤(はまぐり)は初手(しょて)赤貝(あかがい)は夜中(よなか)なり」の巻頭句をはじめとして、句の素材は卑猥(ひわい)であるが、表現は軽妙な滑稽感にあふれた佳句が多く、また江戸風俗の資料としても貴重。なお、大正に至って、沢田例外(れいがい)が5～8編を編んだ。
