A mountain range that runs east to west through the central west of the island of New Guinea, Indonesia. During the Dutch colonial period it was called the Sneeuw (Snowy) Mountains. It is divided into two mountain ranges: the Sudirman Range in the west (highest peak is Mount Jaya at 5,039m) and the Jayawijaya Range in the east (highest peak is Mount Trikora at 4,750m, followed by Mount Mandara at 4,702m). It is a young Tertiary folded mountain range, and despite its location close to the equator, areas above 4,500m are covered in perpetual snow. It is largely undeveloped, and the mountainous areas are inhabited by Papuan tribes. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
