A general term for an instrument that measures the moisture content of a substance. Substances come in three states: solid, liquid, and gas. Moisture meters that measure the content of water vapor in gas are often distinguished as hygrometers. Methods for measuring moisture include (1) weighing, (2) density, (3) humidity, (4) chemical, (5) electrical, and (6) optical. (1) is the standard method because it directly determines the moisture content by heating the sample to evaporate the moisture and measuring the change in the sample's mass before and after.
