...A deciduous tall tree of the Meliaceae family native to China, often planted in gardens in Japan. The trunk is straight, and larger trees can reach a height of 20-30 m and a diameter of 90 cm. The leaves are odd- or even-pinnate compound leaves 30-50 cm long, arranged alternately. There are 5-11 pairs of leaflets, which are 8-15 cm long, oblong to ovate, entire or with a few low serrations. The flowers are greenish-white, bisexual, and bloom in large panicles in June and July. There are 5 sepals, 5 petals, and 5 stamens. They have a distinctive scent. The fruit is a leathery or woody capsule, oblong and about 2 cm long.
