This old town occupies the southern half of Yakushima in Kumage District, Kagoshima Prefecture. Most of the area is mountainous, with natural Yakusugi forests, and forestry is thriving. Vegetables, Ponkan oranges, and Tankan oranges are cultivated on the narrow arable land along the coast. Coastal fishing is practiced. The Anbo River in the east is rich in hydropower, and power source development has progressed. Regular ferries to Kagoshima City stop at Awa at the mouth of the river. There are tourist spots such as Onomaida Hot Springs. In 1993, Yakushima was added to the list of natural heritage sites under the World Heritage Convention.
