A medieval checkpoint was established in Iijima along Zaimokuza Coast in Kamakura, Sagami Province. In 1232, Wakaejima was built as a port facility on the Iijima frontage by the monk O-Amidabutsu, and the area became the center of port and commerce in medieval Kamakura. Iijima Checkpoint may have been located on Wakaejima. The date of its establishment is unknown, but according to the Seigu Mondosho, written by Nichiren in 1262, Ninsho of Gokurakuji Temple "takes rice from the Mutsuura checkpoint up to the port of Iijima, and many people lament it." From Ninsho onwards, Gokurakuji Temple held the rights to the land and rice in Iijima until the Nanboku-cho period. In 1339, the Kamakura government notified Iijima Checkpoint that it would be exempt from tax on rice tax from Engakuji Temple land, as had been the case before.
