Died October 26, 1889. Paris. French playwright. Often compared to his contemporary Dumas the Younger. Following in the footsteps of Ponsard, he emerged as a tragic verse writer when the Romantic movement was on the decline. Works from this period include La Ciguë (1844) (The Poisoned Carrot), but his direction as a writer was determined by his comedy of manners, Gabrielle (1849). From then on, he used the customs and social conditions of the Second French Empire as his subject matter, affirming the morality of the bourgeoisie and maintaining a stance of opposition to the Romantic movement. One of his representative works is Le Gendre de M. Poirier (54) (The Son-in-Law of M. Poirier). He became a member of the Académie Française in 1857. His other works include Le Mariage d'Olympe (55) (The Marriage of Olympe).

フランスの劇作家。同時代の小デュマと並び称される。ロマン派が衰退してきた頃に，ポンサールに続き韻文悲劇作家として登場。この時期の作品には『毒にんじん』 La Ciguë (1844) があるが，1849年の風俗喜劇『ガブリエル』 Gabrielleによって作家としての方向が定まった。以後はフランス第二帝政下の風俗，世相を題材として，ブルジョア階級の道徳を肯定し，ロマン派と対峙する姿勢を保った。代表作としては『ポアリエ氏の婿』 Le Gendre de M. Poirier (54) がある。 57年アカデミー・フランセーズ会員。その他『オランプの結婚』 Le Mariage d'Olympe (55) など。
