Born: September 17, 1820. Drôme, Balance Died October 26, 1889. Paris. French playwright. Often compared to his contemporary Dumas the Younger. Following in the footsteps of Ponsard, he emerged as a tragic verse writer when the Romantic movement was on the decline. Works from this period include La Ciguë (1844) (The Poisoned Carrot), but his direction as a writer was determined by his comedy of manners, Gabrielle (1849). From then on, he used the customs and social conditions of the Second French Empire as his subject matter, affirming the morality of the bourgeoisie and maintaining a stance of opposition to the Romantic movement. One of his representative works is Le Gendre de M. Poirier (54) (The Son-in-Law of M. Poirier). He became a member of the Académie Française in 1857. His other works include Le Mariage d'Olympe (55) (The Marriage of Olympe). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
