Progressive Party

Progressive Party
A third party or minority party formed in the United States to counter the two existing major parties. It has been formed three times under the same name. The first was formed in 1912, led by Republican progressive Theodore Roosevelt, and aimed to establish corporate regulations and social welfare systems, reflecting the ideas of the progressive movement of the time. Using his reputation as a former president, Roosevelt competed on equal terms with the incumbent conservative Republican Taft, but was defeated by Democrat Wilson, who also advocated progressiveism. The second was formed in 1924, led by Republican progressive Robert La Follette, and advocated the restriction of monopolies and the nationalization of public works.
