A general term for marine fishes belonging to the suborder Ceratiina in the order Anglerfishes. It can also refer to one of these species. This species is widely distributed in the deep seas of the temperate and tropical Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The body is laterally flattened or spherical, and the whole body is purple-black in color. The eyes are very small, and the first spine of the dorsal fin is long and bulging at the tip, where the light-emitting organ is found, hence the name anglerfish. It is thought that they swing this around on the dark deep sea floor to attract small fish and other prey, which they then prey on. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
