Caernarfon (English spelling)
Gwynedd is the administrative capital of the northwestern Wales region of the United Kingdom. It was formerly the county capital of the county of Caernarvonshire. It is located on the mainland near the western end of the narrow Menai Strait, which separates the Welsh mainland from the island of Anglesey. The Romans built a fortress on a low hill southeast of the present town in about 75 AD, and called it Segontium. The Normans invaded the town for a short time in the 11th century, but a fort was built there, and the Duke of Gwynedd of Wales later established a manor around the fort. Edward I of England, who conquered Wales in 1282-83, built a large fortress (Caernarvon Castle) around the fort, and built a town surrounded by a defensive wall next to it, making it the capital of North Wales. The town was granted a royal charter in 1284, and developed into one of the most important towns in Wales. In the 19th century, it prospered as a shipping port for slate from the nearby Snowdon Mountains. Today, it is only a small commercial center, but the 13th-century castle and its walls are very well preserved, so it is popular with tourists, especially in the summer. Caernarvon Castle was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1986 as one of the "Fortresses of Edward I in Gwynedd". Population: 9,611 (2001).
