Cetane

Japanese: セタン
Cetane

C 16 H 34 (226.45). CH 3 (CH 2 ) 14 CH 3 . It is also called hexadecane. It is an aliphatic saturated hydrocarbon (paraffin group). Of alkanes with 16 carbon atoms, the straight-chain ones are specifically called cetane. In contrast to its isomer, it is also called normal hexadecane or n -hexadecane. It is contained in crude oil. It is produced by reducing cetyl iodide in ethanol or acetic acid with zinc and hydrochloric acid, by heating palmitic acid with hydrogen iodide and red phosphorus, or by fractional distillation from diesel fraction. It is a colorless crystalline solid at low temperatures and a colorless liquid at room temperature. Its melting point is 16.17 °C, and its boiling point is 286.79 °C. Its viscosity is 0.76996 and 1.43250. It is soluble in ethanol, acetone, and ether, but insoluble in water. It is a standard fuel (cetane number = 100) for measuring the cetane number, which indicates the ignition ability of diesel fuel, and is an excellent component of diesel fuel. It is also used as a solvent. [CAS 544-76-3]
