Kadoza

Japanese: 角座 - かどざ
Kadoza

This theater is located in Dotonbori 1-chome, Chuo-ku, Osaka. It was formerly called the Corner Theater. In 1652 (Shoo 1), Osaka Tazaemon, who came down from Kyoto, built it in Dotonbori with permission to hold plays. It flourished as one of Osaka's leading theaters along with Naka Theater (Nakaza) and Onishi Theater (renamed Naniwa-za in 1887 (Meiji 20), closed in January 2002 (Heisei 14). In 1758 (Horeki 8), the world's first revolving stage was installed, thanks to the idea of the first Namiki Shozo, and it left a significant mark in the history of theater. In the first half of the Meiji period, it was run by Wada Seishichi, and later passed into the hands of Shochiku. It was burned down in an air raid in 1945 (Showa 20), and rebuilt in 1948, but from 1986 it was remodeled and used as a movie theater (closed in 2007).
