A model that simplifies the Heisenberg model for ferromagnetic materials so that the magnetic moment can take only two states, up and down. It was first discussed by E. Ising, a student of W. Heisenberg, but the original version was proposed by W. Lenz. A detailed analysis of this model is important, since any phenomenon in which the components of a system can take only two states can be reduced to the Ising model by appropriate transformation. L. Onsager was the first to successfully treat the two-dimensional Ising model rigorously, making an important contribution to the study of critical phenomena.
