A Chinese geography book. 40 volumes. The author was Li Daoyuan (?-527) of the Northern Wei dynasty. The book was originally written in the 3rd century as Shuijing, which gives a very simple description of the sources, routes, and mouths of China's major rivers. This book was written by Li Daoyuan in the early 6th century, when he added detailed notes to Shuijing. The notes cover 1,252 rivers, far more than the 137 in Shuijing, and describe the course of these rivers, their cities, historical sites, and landscapes in their basins, citing a wealth of literature and based on his own experiences. The literary style of the descriptions is well known, and many of the books cited have already been lost, making this book of great philological importance. The format based on the river system is unique among Chinese geography books, which are usually based on administrative divisions.
