A deciduous tall tree of the Salicaceae family. In Japan, it grows in alpine or subalpine areas, and the colonies along the Azusa River in Kamikochi are famous. It is distributed in central and northern Korea, northeastern China, and eastern Siberia. It can reach a height of 15 m and a diameter of 1 m. Its narrow, oblong leaves are about 5 cm long, powdery white, hairless, and have fine serrations. In early summer, it produces willow-like inflorescences along with new leaves. The young branches and leaves are covered with a thick white waxy substance, giving it the name "make-up," which means "appearing as if they are wearing makeup."
