Bluebeard is the nickname of Ural, the protagonist of a story in Perrault's Fairy Tales (1697), who kills six wives one after another and is killed by the brother of his seventh wife. The model for the character is Gilles de Retz (1404-1440), who was affectionately known as Bluebeard, an aristocrat, art lover, and soldier. He fought bravely in the Hundred Years' War and inherited a huge fortune at the age of 28, but was executed for numerous crimes, including the massacre of young children. He is also said to have been modeled on Henry VIII. There have been many later adaptations and retellings of the story, including Bartók's opera Bluebeard's Castle (1911).
