A former town in Amakusa County, eastern Amakusa Shimoshima, Kumamoto Prefecture. In addition to rice cultivation, mandarin oranges are grown on terraced fields on the sloping land. Coastal fishing is also practiced, but is increasingly being converted to aquaculture. The coastal area is part of Unzen-Amakusa National Park. In March 2006, it merged with Hondo City, Ushibuka City, and the Amakusa County towns of Ariake, Goshoura, Kuratake, Sumimoto, Itsuwa, Amakusa, and Kawaura to become a city. 55.20 km2 . 4,188 people (2003).
