Japanese: 新和[町] - しんわ

A former town in Amakusa County, eastern Amakusa Shimoshima, Kumamoto Prefecture. In addition to rice cultivation, mandarin oranges are grown on terraced fields on the sloping land. Coastal fishing is also practiced, but is increasingly being converted to aquaculture. The coastal area is part of Unzen-Amakusa National Park. In March 2006, it merged with Hondo City, Ushibuka City, and the Amakusa County towns of Ariake, Goshoura, Kuratake, Sumimoto, Itsuwa, Amakusa, and Kawaura to become a city. 55.20 ^km2 . 4,188 people (2003).

熊本県天草下島東部，天草郡の旧町。米作を行うほか，傾斜地の段々畑でミカンを栽培する。沿岸漁業も行われるが，養殖漁業への転換が進む。沿岸部は雲仙天草国立公園に属する。2006年３月，本渡市，牛深市，天草郡有明町，御所浦町，倉岳町，栖本町，五和町，天草町，河浦町と合併し市制，天草市となる。55.20km²。4188人（2003）。
