Alamūt (English spelling)
An Assassin fortress built on a steep rocky mountain in the Alamut Valley in the Elburz Mountains in northern Iran. It was originally built by the king of the nearby Dayram region (→ Dayram people), and its name is said to come from the Dayram language Āluh Āmūt (My teaching). It was occupied by Hasan ibn al-Sabbah in 1090 and served as the base of Assassin activity for about 150 years, until it was destroyed by the Mongol army led by Hulagu (Asahi Retsuko) in 1256.
