An individual's given name. In Japan, a person's name is made up of a family name (surname) and a given name (personal name), so it is also called a surname. There are various types of names, such as childhood names given at birth, real names given at coming-of-age ceremonies, nicknames given because the real name is taboo, nicknames given based on characteristics or other factors, as well as nicknames and posthumous names. In Japan today, the kanji used in names are generally chosen from kanji used in common use and kanji used for names. In the West, family names are surnames, and Christian names (first names) are given names. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
