He was one of the seven legendary sages of ancient India. The seven sages were Bhrigu, Angiras, Atri, Viswamitra (or Kaushika), Kashyapa, Vasishta, and Agastya. The Brahmins were descended from these seven sages and classified into seven families called gotras.
