A character in Greek mythology. Son of the supreme god Zeus (or the nymph Callisto). After his mother Callisto was transformed into a bear, he was raised by Maia, the mother of Hermes. Arcas' maternal grandfather Lycaon killed the young Arcas, cooked it, and served it to Zeus's table to test Zeus' omniscience. However, Zeus saw through the plot and struck Lycaon's mansion with lightning, transformed Lycaon into a wolf, and brought Arcas back to life. One day, when Arcas had grown up, he met his mother in the form of a bear in the forest and followed her into Zeus' sanctuary. Everyone who entered there was sentenced to death, but Zeus, feeling sorry for the mother and son, transformed them into the constellations Ursa Major and Boötes (Arcturus). Later, Arcas succeeded Lycaon's son as king of the Pelasgians, and the people were named after him as the Arcadians.
