A Korean-born composer. After studying composition in Japan, he participated in the Korean independence movement. In 1956, he went to Europe and studied under Blacher in Paris and Berlin, establishing his own unique style of polyphonic music that combined traditional Asian and Korean music with Western avant-garde techniques in works such as the orchestral piece Rites Music (Reac) (1966). In 1967, he was arrested from Berlin by the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA) under the Park administration and sentenced to death, but thanks to the rescue efforts of musicians around the world, including Stravinsky and Boulez, and the efforts of the West German government, he was released in 1969. In 1971, he obtained West German citizenship, and in 1974, he became a professor at the Berlin Higher School of Music. He had many Japanese students, including Toshio Hosokawa (1955-), and deepened his ties with Japanese musicians such as Toru Takemitsu. He continued to compose dynamic works until his later years, including the chamber music Images (1968), Cello Concerto (1976), which he wrote while in prison, the Double Concerto for Oboe and Harp (1977), which was premiered by the Holliger couple, the orchestral works Muak (1978), Gwangju Forever! (Example), and Violin Concerto (both 1981), and five symphonies (1982-1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987).

韓国出身の作曲家。日本で作曲を学んだのち朝鮮独立運動に参加。1956年に渡欧しパリとベルリンでブラッハーらに学び，管弦楽曲《礼楽(レアク)》（1966年）などで東洋・朝鮮の伝統音楽と西欧の前衛的手法を融合させた独自の多声音楽を確立。1967年，朴政権下の韓国中央情報部（KCIA）によりベルリンから連行され死刑を求刑されるが，ストラビンスキー，ブーレーズら世界の音楽家の救援活動と西ドイツ政府の尽力で1969年釈放。1971年西ドイツ国籍を得，1974年ベルリン高等音楽学校教授に就任。細川俊夫〔1955-〕ら日本人の弟子も多く，武満徹ら日本の音楽家とも交流を深めた。獄中で書かれた室内楽曲《イマージュ》（1968年），《チェロ協奏曲》（1976年），ホリガー夫妻により初演された《オーボエとハープのための二重協奏曲》（1977年），管弦楽曲《ムアーク》（1978年），同《光州よ永遠に！（範例）》《バイオリン協奏曲》（ともに1981年），５つの交響曲（1982年−1983年，1984年，1985年，1986年，1987年）など，晩年まで力動感みなぎる作品を書き続けた。
