American dunegrass (Hama-ninniku) - American dunegrass
A large perennial grass (illustration) that grows in colonies on coastal sand dunes and sandy areas. It grows in clumps and also produces thick, long, horizontal underground stems. The stems are cylindrical and upright, 1-1.5m tall, with several nodes and short hairs on the upper part. The leaves grow on the bases and on the stems, are broad and linear, initially flattened, then slightly rolled inward, 20-50cm long and 6-15mm wide, somewhat thick, and whitish green in color. In June and July, a single cylindrical spike-like inflorescence grows upright at the top of the stem, 15-25cm long and about 1cm wide, densely bearing numerous spikelets, initially pale green in color and later turning slightly yellowish white, and generally covered with short hairs.
