Omiyo no kata - Omiyo no kata

Japanese: お美代の方 - おみよのかた
Omiyo no kata - Omiyo no kata
Year of death: 1872 (Meiji 5)
Year of birth: Unknown. In the late Edo period, she was a concubine to the 11th shogun, Tokugawa Ienari. She became a concubine in 1810 and was the favorite of Ienari in his later years. She was the mother of Princess Yaguhime (wife of Maeda Noriyasu, lord of Kanazawa), Princess Naka (who died young), and Princess Suehime (wife of Asano Nariaki, lord of Hiroshima). When Princess Yaguhime married into the Maeda clan of Kaga, they built a vermilion-painted Goshudenmon gate (the red gate of the University of Tokyo) at their main residence. Her biological father is said to have been a low-ranking shogunate official, but he was widely rumored to be Nikkei, the chief priest of Chisen-in Temple at Nakayama Hokekyoji Temple. She was under the protection of Ienari, along with her adoptive father, Nakano Sekio, head of the small storehouse, and other members of the family, and boasted great influence.
