Year of death: May 16, 1863 (July 1, 1863) Year of birth: Bunka 7 (1810) A Chinese poet of the late Edo period. His real surname was Ogura, but he took his mother's surname, Toyama. His given name was originally Yufu, then Tan, his pen name was originally Shihatsu, then Unnyo, and his pen name was Yusai. He was the son of Ogura Daifu, a townsman in Edo. He loved poetry from his youth, and frequented the schools of such great poets as Okubo Shibutsu and Kikuchi Gozan, and was praised as a child prodigy. He later studied Confucianism under Nagano Toyozan, and became a treasurer of the Edo Shogunate, but soon quit and went bankrupt due to a dissolute lifestyle. He later participated in the Tamaike Ginsha, led by Yanagawa Seigan, and played an important role in it, while also moving to Nanso, Atsugi, Hachioji, and other areas to support himself by teaching poetry. In 1857 (Ansei 4), he followed his teacher Seigan to Kyoto, and after traveling around various places, he died in Kyoto.
