Shen Wan San (English spelling) Shěn Wàn sān

Japanese: 沈万三 - しんばんさん（英語表記）Shěn Wàn sān

A wealthy Chinese man in the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties. His name is also written as Shen Wanshan. He was from Wu County, Suzhou Prefecture (Jiangsu Province). His given name was Fu. His courtesy name was Zhongrong. He was called Shen Wanshan or Wanshanxiu because he was the third oldest member of his generation, and his wealth was unrivaled in Jiangnan. When Emperor Hongwu expanded the outer city of Jinling (Nanjing), he built half of it, completing it three days before the emperor, which earned him hatred. Later, when he built the city of Suzhou, he was killed on the pretext that he had used stones from Maoshan for the core stone, and his possessions were confiscated by the authorities. Maoshan is a mountain associated with King Yu and the First Emperor.

中国，元末･明初の富豪。沈万山ともつくる。蘇州府呉県(江蘇省)の人。名は富。字は仲栄。一族同世代の年齢の順序が第3であるところから沈万三あるいは万三秀と称せられ，その富は江南に冠絶した。洪武帝が金陵(南京)の外城を広めた時，かれはその半分を築き，帝より3日早く完成してにくまれた。のち蘇州の街を築いた時，茅山（ぼうざん）の石を心礎に用いたのを口実に殺され，家財は官に没収された。茅山は禹王や始皇帝にゆかりの山である。
