...They are an agricultural people whose main crops are yams, cassava, and corn, but they have traditionally formed large urban settlements and developed their own political organizations (according to a 1931 census, 80% of the total population was concentrated in settlements with a population of 2,000 or more, and 35% lived in cities with a population of 20,000 or more). The Yoruba have formed more than 10 independent kingdoms, including the Kingdom of Ife, the Kingdom of Oyo, the Kingdom of Ijesha, the Kingdom of Ijebu, the Kingdom of Ondo, the Kingdom of Ekiti, and the Kingdom of Egba, which are believed to have been established in the 13th and 14th centuries. Each kingdom has a king as its political and religious authority, but the structure of its political organization differs from one another. ...
