However, with the advancement of technology, the possibility of a new cruise missile arose in the mid-1970s. The emergence of small, lightweight turbofan engines as propulsion engines enabled small, lightweight, long-range cruise missiles because they consumed less fuel even when flying at low altitudes and low speeds. By connecting the radio altimeter and the control unit via a computer, it became possible to fly at extremely low altitudes, making it harder for the enemy to detect them. Errors that occur in the inertial guidance system during long flights can be corrected by adopting guidance technologies such as terrain contour matching (abbreviated TERCOM), which will be described later, and this has dramatically improved the accuracy of the missile's impact. In the United States, B52 strategic bombers equipped with air-launched cruise missiles using these technologies were deployed in combat from the end of 1982, and at the end of 1983, the deployment of Tomahawk cruise missiles for attacking ground targets launched from the ground began, followed by the deployment of Tomahawks for surface ships and submarines.
