[history]
From the 12th century onwards, the Margraviate of Baden was formed under the Zähring family, but the country was repeatedly divided and merged through inheritance, and from the 16th century onwards it was reorganised into two states, the Catholic Baden-Baden and the Protestant Baden-Durlach, but both states only had scattered territories on the right bank of the Rhine. Baden's development as a powerful German state began after the time of Margrave Durlach Karl Friedrich (1728-1811).
