Saburobei Takemoto

Japanese: 竹本三郎兵衛 - たけもと・さぶろべえ

Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A Joruri author in the mid-Edo period. He is said to have been the son of Takemoto Chikugonojo (Gizairoku, Nansuimanyu), or the youngest grandson of Chikugonojo (Anaitan), and some say he was the second Yoshida Bunzaburo (Kuroki Kanzo, Wakatsuki Yasuji), but the details are unknown. He first appeared as a co-author of the original version of "Hidakagawa Nyuai Kao" in 1759 (Horeki 9). After that, he collaborated with Chikamatsu Hanji and Miyoshi Matsuraku. He left behind masterpieces of sewamono (domestic dramas) such as "Oshu Adachihara," "Honcho Nijūshi Kō," and "Ōmi Genji Senjinkan" at the Takemoto Theater, and "Megakago Shiki Akanesome" and "Ayayo Onna Maigo" at the Toyotake Theater. They collaborated on over 30 stories over a period of 20 years, until "Higashiyamadono Yoji Monogatari" in 1780 (Anei 9). He was a great partner of Hanji. 江戸中期の浄瑠璃作者。竹本筑後掾の子(『戯財録』『南水漫遊』),あるいは筑後掾の末孫とする説(『穴意探』),また2代目吉田文三郎のことであるとする説(黒木勘蔵,若月保治)もあるが,詳細は不明。宝暦9(1759)年「日高川入相花王」の正本の作者連名に登場するのが初出。以後,近松半二,三好松洛らと合作。竹本座で「奥州安達原」「本朝廿四孝」「近江源氏先陣館」など,豊竹座で「迎駕籠死期茜染」「艶容女舞衣」などの世話物の名作を残す。安永9(1780)年の「東山殿幼稚物語」まで20年間に三十余編を合作する。半二の名パートナーであった。3代目は天明・寛政期(18世紀後半)に活躍。<参考文献>黒木勘蔵『浄瑠璃史』,若月保治『人形浄瑠璃史研究』,『義太夫年表/近世篇1』
