One of the most well-known clowns who appear as servants or attendants in the Commedia dell'arte. It is said that the name is derived from Herlequin, a mischievous devil who appears in medieval French tales. Zan Ganassa, also known as Alberto Nazelli (c. 1540-1584), a comedian, gave the name Arlequin to Zanni, the prototype of the Commedia dell'arte clown, during a tour of France.

コメディア･デラルテの中で下僕･従者として登場する代表的な道化役の一人。中世フランスの説話に現れるいたずら悪魔エルルカンHerlequin，エルカンHellequinがその語源であるといわれている。ザン･ガナッサ，またの名をアルベルト･ナゼッリ(1540ころ‐84)という喜劇役者が，フランス巡業のおり，コメディア･デラルテの道化役の祖型であるザンニZanniにアルルカンArlequinの名を与えた。
