Also known as osmoregulation. A mechanism for maintaining a constant osmotic pressure in body fluids in living organisms. Osmoregulation is a major issue for all living organisms, but it is essential for survival in saltwater fish, whose body fluids have a lower osmotic pressure than seawater, and in freshwater fish, whose body fluids have a higher osmotic pressure than freshwater. When the osmotic pressure of the surroundings is high, a mechanism is activated that absorbs water and excretes salts, and when it is low, a mechanism is activated that excretes water and absorbs salts. Generally, the kidneys, which are excretory organs, and the gills, which are respiratory organs, are responsible for this.

浸透調節とも。生体において体液の浸透圧を一定に保つ機構。浸透圧調節はすべて生体にとって大きな問題だが，海水より低浸透圧の体液をもつ海水魚，淡水より高浸透圧の体液をもつ淡水魚などでは生存上必須となる。まわりの浸透圧が高いときには，水分を吸収，塩類を排出，逆に低いときには水分を排出し，塩類を吸収する機構が働く。一般に，排出器官である腎臓や，呼吸器官の鰓などがその担い手である。
