A city in the north of Karnataka state in southwest India. It is located about 170 km west of Hyderabad, at an altitude of 450 m on the hills that branch off to the southeast from the Balaghat range. It is the economic center of the Krishna and Bhima river basins that continue south. It belonged to the Delhi dynasty from the early 14th century and was once the capital of the Bahmani dynasty, but it became part of the Mughal Empire after Aurangzeb's Deccan expedition, and was annexed to the Hyderabad kingdom in the early 18th century. It is a center of cotton trading, with thriving cotton industries, oil extraction, and flour milling. There are many ruins, such as the mausoleums and mosques of Bahmani kings.
