A general term for paper made from unbleached kraft pulp. It is brown in color and strong. Examples include wrapping paper such as heavy duty kraft paper and ribbed kraft paper, and base paper for paper tape. In Japan, kraft pulp from softwood and hardwood trees is used as the raw material for kraft paper, while in some countries non-wood kraft pulp such as straw and bagasse (the fibrous residue from sugarcane stalks that have been squeezed to separate the sucrose) is used, both in an unbleached state. In particular, kraft paper for heavy duty sacks to hold cement, flour, etc. is made from softwood pulp, as it requires high tear strength. Before papermaking, kraft pulp is beaten to a sticky state, and then heavily sized (adding a glue-like liquid to the paper material) to make it water-resistant. Generally, a fourdrinier papermaking machine is used, as it is suitable for mass-producing paper with less unevenness in the papermaking process and a low ratio of strength in the length and width directions.
