Iwasaki grass cicada - Iwasaki grass cicada

An insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadidae. It is found on islands south of Okinawa Island and in Taiwan. It is the smallest cicada in Japan, with a body length of 12-17 mm. Its entire body is glossy black. Its wings are transparent and yellow at the base. It lives on silver grass and sugarcane, appearing from March to June. It makes a long buzzing sound on the leaves.

昆虫綱半翅目(はんしもく)セミ科に属する昆虫。沖縄本島以南の島々、台湾に分布。日本最小のセミで、体長12～17ミリメートル。体全体が光沢のある黒色。はねは透明で、基部は黄色を帯びる。ススキ、サトウキビなどにすみ、3～6月に出現する。葉上でジーと長く鳴く。
