The greatest Roman historian of late antiquity, born c. 330-c. 395. A Greek of high rank from Antioch. As a soldier he accompanied Ursicinus, whom he respected, on campaigns in Italy, Gaul, and the East, and later on Julian's campaign against Persia. From 378 onwards he lived and wrote in Rome, and produced a 31-volume history of Rome in Latin. With the intention of succeeding Tacitus, he wrote the history from Nerva to Gratian (96-378), but the first 13 volumes have been lost, and only the part covering his own period, from the latter half of the reign of Constantine II in 353 onwards, remains.
