A sect of new Taoism. In 1142 (the second year of the imperial line) during the Jin dynasty, Liu Deren (1122-80) of Zhengzhou (Leling County, Shandong Province, China) mastered the gist of the Tao Te Ching and began to spread Taoism based on this. The sect's teachings are based on the idea of purity and inaction, and it preaches a life of asceticism, self-sufficiency, and mutual assistance, including Buddhist precepts and Confucian morality, which span the three religions of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Since the Yuan dynasty, this sect has been favored on a par with Zhengyi Sect and Quanzhen Sect, and has established a social status, but as it expanded into Jiangnan, internal conflicts over succession continued, and it was destroyed before the emergence of the Ming dynasty.
