A polydentate ligand is a compound that can become a polydentate ligand by coordinating with a metal ion to form a chelate compound. For example, carbonic acid gives up two hydrogen ions to become a carbonate ion, which then coordinates to the central atom M to form a carbonate complex with a four-membered chelate ring, so carbonic acid, carbonate ion, or carbonate salts are among the simplest chelating agents. A similar example is a dicarboxylic acid such as oxalic acid, which has two acidic groups and forms an oxalato complex with a five-membered chelate ring.

金属イオンに配位してキレート化合物をつくる多座配位子，あるいはそのような多座配位子となりうる化合物をいう。たとえば炭酸は二つの水素イオンを放って炭酸イオンとなり，中心原子Mに配位して4員キレート環をもつカルボナト錯体をつくるから，炭酸，炭酸イオンあるいは炭酸塩は最も簡単なキレート試薬の一つである。同様のものとして，5員キレート環をもつオキサラト錯体をつくる，酸性基二つをもつシュウ酸のようなジカルボン酸がある。
