...The cause is believed to be a combination of the spread of rabies and distemper, the progress of development, and the decline in the number of deer, which was their food. The Hokkaido wolf, Canis lupus hattai , which was distributed in Hokkaido, was a subspecies of the gray wolf, with a body length of about 125 cm and a tail length of about 34 cm. It is said to have become extinct around 1900.
