Messenger of God

Japanese: 神使 - しんし

〘Noun〙 (also "jinshi") A messenger of the gods. Usually it is a bird, animal, insect, or fish that is related to that god. The dove of Hachiman, the deer of Kasuga Myojin, the monkey of Hiyoshi Sanno, the crow of Kumano Gongen. A messenger. ※Nakatomi Harae Kunkai (late 12th century) "The divine light messenger _travels _to the Hachiman region, exhorts mercy, and inhabits the land of _one hundred thousand _people ." ※Essays, Hokuetsu Seppu (1836-42) First paragraph "This is called Kasui-iwai. It is a Shinto ritual held on the 15th of the New Year every year. This is because a divine messenger (jinshi) is given to each household where there are newlyweds."
