New Sarugakuki - Shinsarugakuki

A record book from the late Heian period. 1 volume. Classical Chinese. Written by Fujiwara Akihira (989?-1066). Date of origin unknown. Sarugaku is a humorous popular performing art that arose in the Heian period, and this book first describes Sarugaku performances, listing the various forms such as puppetry, acrobatics, and impersonations, then lists Sarugaku masters and critiques the art. It then lists the family structure, lifestyle, and appearance of the family of Uemon-no-jo, a spectator, and related items in 28 articles. The books list the names and actions of all things related to the capital, such as the appearance of aged wives and courtesans, archery and arrow techniques, sumo wrestling skills, the academic work of scholars and doctors, the practices of Shingon and Tendai monks, farming, the skills of artisans, the arts of Buddhist sculptors and painters, and local products and trade items from all over the country. They are therefore not only useful as material for theatrical performances, but also serve as a valuable document for learning about the social state and lives of ordinary people at the time.

平安後期の記録書。1巻。漢文。藤原明衡(あきひら)（989？―1066）作。成立未詳。猿楽は平安時代におこった滑稽(こっけい)な大衆芸能であるが、本書は最初猿楽の演戯について、人形操りや曲芸、物真似(ものまね)などの形態を並べ、次に猿楽の名人を列挙してその芸態を論評する。そして見物人の右衛門尉(うえもんのじょう)一家の家族構成と生活態度、容貌(ようぼう)およびそれに関係ある事物の品目を28条にわたって列挙する。老妻や遊女の姿態、弓箭(きゅうせん)、相撲(すもう)の技、学者・医師の学業、真言・天台僧の行、農耕、工匠の技、仏師・絵師の芸、諸国の物産や交易品目など都の人事全般の事物の名称や所作が列挙されており、演劇の資料としてだけではなく、当時の社会状態や庶民生活を知るための貴重な文献である。
