A long allegorical poem by the English poet E. Spenser. It was meant to be an epic poem in 12 volumes, telling the adventures of 12 knights (representing 12 virtues) in search of the "Fairy Queen" (representing "Glory" or Queen Elizabeth), with the assistance of Prince Arthur (the highest virtue, Kalocagatia). It took him 20 years to complete, but he only completed the first 6 volumes (vols. 1-3, 1590; vols. 4-6, 1609) and a fragment of the 7th volume (1609). In the first volume, the Redcross Knight (Church of England) protects the virgin Euna (Truth) from hypocrisy, lust, and despair and marries her; in the second volume, the knight of Temperance battles the enchantress of lust; in the third volume, the female knight of Chastity goes on an adventure; in the fourth volume, the knight of Friendship; in the fifth volume, the knight of Justice goes on an adventure while making allegorical references to historical facts of the time; and in the sixth volume, the knight of Civility slays the beast of Slander. The author's intention to overcome natural human desires with a will based on religion and to establish "chivalry" is unfolded through gorgeous pictorial images and the beautiful rhythm of the Spenser stanzas.
