Ars Antiqua

Japanese: アルス・アンティカ（英語表記）ars antiqua

It means "old art". It was originally used by 14th-century theorists to contrast music from the late 13th century with the music of their own time (→ Ars Nova), and today it broadly refers to all music from the 13th century, including the Notre Dame school. In terms of musical genres, polyphonic music such as organum, motet, clausura, and conductus was composed, and in terms of theory, mensural notation was developed. Representative musicians include Perotinus, Franco of Cologne, Petrus de Cruce, and Adam de la Halle.

「古い芸術」の意。 14世紀の理論家たちが，13世紀末の音楽を自分たちの時代の音楽 (→アルス・ノバ ) に対比させて呼んだのが始りで，今日では，広くノートル・ダム楽派を含む 13世紀の音楽全般を意味する。楽種ではオルガヌム，モテト，クラウスラ，コンドゥクトゥスなどの多声楽が作曲され，理論では定量記譜法が発達した。代表的な音楽家は，ペロティヌス，ケルンのフランコ，ペトルス・デ・クルーチェ，アダン・ド・ラ・アール。
