A port city on the Indian Ocean coast of Cape Province, South Africa. Population 102,325 (1991). The town was first established when Glamorgan Castle was built on a military base established by the British in 1847. Located at the mouth of the Buffalo River, the town was named Port Rex and was annexed to the Cape Colony as the Port of East London in 1848. With rail and road connections to Cape Town, Durban and the Orange Free State (now the Free State), a large dock was completed in 1947 and the town rapidly developed into a commercial and industrial city.
